We at Fields have a passion for good food – a passion that goes back to the day in 1935 when Jack Field first opened the doors of his shop on Main Street, Skibbereen, but which also has deeper roots stretching back to the 1840s when a bakery operated in the same premises, making ours probably the oldest bakery in Ireland.

It is a passion that has brought enormous benefits to customers and local producers alike.

Our wide base of customers throughout West Cork know that they are always guaranteed to find a dazzling array of food items in our store at great prices including the best local produce and daily offerings from our kitchen and our award-winning bakery.  We pride ourselves in stocking the best in-season produce, such as summer salads and strawberries from Union Hall or game from Wild Irish Game in Wicklow, and with an abundant supply of seafood available locally – daily catches from the Celtic Sea, crab from Cape Clear, oysters from Sherkin, prawns from Roaring Water Bay, scallops alive and in their shells from Dunmanus Bay – we believe we produce the finest fish platters in Ireland.

Local Relationships - National Reputation

The relationship we have established with local suppliers is unparalleled, and we have played, and continue to play, a central role in developing the artisan food sector now flourishing in West Cork. Many of Ireland’s best known artisan producers such as Glenilen, Union Hall Smoked Fish, Gubbeen, Skeaghmore, Rosscarbery Meats, Durrus Cheese, and Sally Barnes Smoked Fish, had their products first displayed in our store, an initial exposure that allowed them to develop further and go on to earn worldwide success and recognition.

Award-winning food writers John and Sally McKenna admit that when they first visited us twenty three years ago they were bowled over by what they saw. “Discovering John Field’s shop in 1989 helped us to define the Irish food culture we were looking for,” John has said in an interview. “The shop set the benchmark that we applied to every other store in the country. We wanted everyone else to be as good as this great West Cork icon.”

We have featured in every single book that John and Sally have written – from the first Irish Food Guide in 1989 to the Bridgestone Irish Food Guide in 1991 and all subsequent editions.
